the flood
We thought we were safe, that we were invulnerable to disaster. Long had it been set in our minds that these lands were a haven, protected and maintained by quarrelsome but mostly benign deities.
Oh, how very wrong we were...
It wasn't long before the very heavens tore loose, unleashing their wrath upon sinners and innocents alike. Rivers and lakes yawned where water had never stood in our collective memories, flesh and earth giving to the swell of flood waters as they swept over the landscape, muddy and angry in their rush. Whole areas vanished from sight, drowning beneath deep and silty reservoirs. Fathers, brothers, daughters, mothers; it seemed no one was spared from the sudden and unexpected event, leaving hearts as open and raw as the ravaged soil beneath our hooves. The stench of death and stagnancy now fills our lungs, the final memory of those unable to escape the raging currents.
