In the Rainbow Factory, where your fears and horrors come true
In the Rainbow Factory, where not a single soul gets through
Name: Spectrum
Age: 7
Breed: Akhal Teke
Gender: Stallion
Region: Osiris
Appearance: Spectrum's build is typical of his breed; lean and wiry, all ropy sinew and no extra bulk. His face is long and slightly convex. His eyes are large and almond shaped, his ears are long and thin. His mane and tail are fairly sparse, but long. He has very long, thin legs that appear quite delicate. He stands about 16 hands high, and wishes like hell he were taller.
Spectrum's base color is steel grey. His mane and tail are black with fine red streaks. His eyes are a startling bright blue. A yellow dorsal stripe runs down his back. Dark blue zebra stripes run up his lower legs.
Personality: When things are going his way, Spectrum is a real pleasure; cheerful, jokey, even nurturing. He will weave the most beautiful pictures for you if only you ask, and make you feel special.
This changes if things are NOT going his way.
Caught in a bad mood, Spectrum is terrible to behold. His sharp mind becomes deadly with cunning, and his temper boils over. It can seem that he has no conscience at these times, and perhaps he doesn't. The dream you so clung to becomes a nightmare, filled with imaginary monsters that seem real and real wounds that you can scarcely believe. In short, Spectrum is a powerful friend and an absolutely terrible enemy.
Power: Illusion (he can grab the mind of another and change the world before their eyes; colors, shapes, hallucinations. This can be beautiful or horrendous, depending on what he wants to do to your psyche. He can only do this to one horse at a time, and that's probably a good thing).
History: Spectrum's birth was a very difficult one. His dam was in labor for nearly 48 hours, and nearly dead by the time he finally drew his first earthly breath. He was a weak foal, not standing for nearly a day.
But thanks to their supportive herd, mother and son survived.
Said herd called Amun home, and was generally peaceful, shedding blood only when they needed to defend their territory or lives. Life was good; simple. Spectrum had no shortage of love and friendship to thrive on, and was slowly learning his power, which at the time he could only imagine using for the comfort and joy of his friends.
One day, when Spectrum was a yearling, a stranger came around.
He said his name was Cassius, and that while he came from Osiris, he hoped that they could be friends. When asked what his business was with the herd, he claimed that his family had abandoned him and he needed a safe place to recover from the loss. He was allowed to stay, and Spectrum became absolutely riveted with this swarthy newcomer.
He began abandoning his friends and tagging along with Cassius wherever he went, lapping up his tales of seduction and adventure. For a colt, Cassius was the ultimate hero: strong, carefree, independent. His own boss.
And in this way, the newcomer began to exert his influence over Spectrum.
As it turned out, they had the same power: Illusion. When Spectrum told Cassius that he used his power mainly for "Playing games and putting on shows for my family", the great stallion laughed in a bellowing sort of way and said that this was a waste of his ability: "You could do great things, young one, if you would only grow a set of balls."
The training began with small pranks: scaring a filly with a vision of a monster so she ran shrieking to her mother, shrouding an elder's vision so he crashed headfirst into a tree.
Spectrum liked these little jokes. He liked them a lot. He started to become cunning, manipulative, but this did not decrease his popularity among the herd; on the contrary he was looked upon with new admiration. By the time he was two, fillies his age and older were flirting and cavorting for him, begging him to give them sweet dreams and show them the magical worlds of his mind. His power grew day by day, with Cassius looking on.
When Spectrum turned four, Cassius suggested that they leave the little herd and set off to make a new life in Osiris. Spectrum agreed, shocking and breaking the hearts of his parents, who had been under the impression that he would be taking care of them into their old age. With scarcely a goodbye, the two stallions of Illusion set off into the world.
The next three years passed like a dizzying party. The pair used their powers for whatever they pleased, and soon became (in)famous throughout their circle of influence. It is up for debate whether Spectrum and Cassius ever had an experimental love affair.
Now, Cassius is dead, and it is also up for debate what (or who) decided that he was no longer useful.
